In my second trip to the Brainard Lake Recreation Area I decided to try the Blue Lake Trail. The wooded Mitchell Lake Trail enters the Indian Peaks Wilderness near the bridge across Mitchell Creek, then continues a half mile to Mitchell Lake on a good trail. If the trailhead parking lot is full, there is usually plenty of parking space in the Brainard Lake day use area, though that adds approximately a mile each way to the hike.
